the greatest mystery is not that we have been flung at random between the profusion of matter and of the stars, but that within this prison we can draw from ourselves images powerful enough to deny our nothingness.
More girls were killed in the last 50 years, precisely because they were girls, than men killed in all the wars in the 20th century. More girls are killed in this routine gendercide in any one decade than people were slaughtered in all the genocides of the 20th century.
The equivalent of 5 jumbo jets worth of women die in labor each day… life time risk of maternal death is 1,000x higher in a poor country than in the west. That should be an international scandal.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention to arrive safely in a pretty and well preserved body; but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow! What a ride!’
So the Americans want to bomb another country in the Middle East. I cannot even enumerate the many ways in which I disagree with this sentiment. It’s so hypocritical to say that the Syrians need to be punished for using chemical weapons. Over 100 000 Syrians have been killed since the civil war started. Why are we now going to condemn them for how they kill each other. Don’t misunderstand me, I think anyone using chemical weapons is absolutely vile, yet what of bombs and machine guns? What about targeted drone killing and it’s collateral damage? How are so called “conventional weapons” any different? The net result is the same: dead people. It is becoming more and more difficult for western nations to pretend that these Middle East interventions are about anything but oil. We in the west live in a glass house fortified by our moral superiority, we should take special care with who we throw our amoral stones at. Maybe keep them close for fear they might be thrown back. Remember when they gave newly elected President Obama the Nobel Peace Prize? They seem to have made a mistake. Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and even Egypt and Iraq are doing whatever they can to accommodate Syrian refugees. Maybe we should follow their lead.
